It’s time for a look back over the past week, and to see what’s coming up. This feature is based on the original Clock Rewinders on a Book Binge.
Last Week on the Bookcase
The voting for Top 25 Book Blogger for 2012 on SkinnyScoop goes until the end of August, so if you have a few moments, I’d love it if you could visit the list and vote for The Oaken Bookcase. Thanks, love you all 🙂
It’s been a fairly quiet week on the Bookcase this week. I don’t really have an excuse, other than lack of sleep making me not want to write much.
Progress for RCCleanup: 7/22.
Reviews:
- Seraphina, Rachel Hartman – a 5-star review, I loved this young adult fantasy with music, dragons and lovely romance!
- India Black, Carol K Carr – an adventurous spy novel set in Victorian London. This was our first book club read and we had mixed reactions to it.
Around the Community
Once again I’ve not had a chance to get caught up on my blogs this week. My reader is groaning! I did see this though:
- Laura of Colorimetry held a vote for the items people look for most in reviews – she has put together a very useful list of the results and discussed what she herself likes to see in reviews. It’s useful to have a read and re-evaluate your review structure every now and then!
Book Loot
- Storm, Brigid Kemmerer – purchased from Amazon. All the girls are gushing over this series so I thought I’d better give it a look. Strictly for scientific purposes, of course.
- Love in a Cold Climate, Nancy Mitford – our second book club read.

A Discovery of Witches, Deborah Harkness
Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.
I got this book from the library. In large-format paperback and at just shy of 600 pages, it’s really quite enormous. I have no idea how long it will take me to get through it, but I’m really enjoying the world of creatures that has been woven around the familiar landmarks of Oxford.
Coming up
Defiance, CJ Redwine
Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city’s brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses, host dinner parties, and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father’s apprentice, Logan—the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same boy who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.
Must keep battling on against the review copy pile, even if this book ends up outside the RCCleanup month!
Have a great week everyone!
I had hardbacks of both Discover of Witches and Shadow of Night and they were huge. I had to make a little duvet prop for them as my wrists couldn’t cope holding them for long! Great books though and I do love her world.
Ellie recently posted..What to do with a negative review?
Jeez.. I can’t imagine how huge the hardbacks must be! At least I have the second book in kindle format so that should be a bit easier to handle. I’m really enjoying the world too… it’s a little addictive, I can’t seem to stop reading!
