Last Week on the Bookcase

It’s been a fairly quiet week on the Bookcase this week. I don’t really have an excuse, other than lack of sleep making me not want to write much.

Progress for RCCleanup: 7/22.

Reviews:

• Seraphina, Rachel Hartman – a 5-star review, I loved this young adult fantasy with music, dragons and lovely romance!
• India Black, Carol K Carr – an adventurous spy novel set in Victorian London. This was our first book club read and we had mixed reactions to it.

Around the Community

Once again I’ve not had a chance to get caught up on my blogs this week. My reader is groaning! I did see this though:

• Laura of Colorimetry held a vote for the items people look for most in reviews – she has put together a very useful list of the results and discussed what she herself likes to see in reviews. It’s useful to have a read and re-evaluate your review structure every now and then!

Book Loot

• Storm, Brigid Kemmerer – purchased from Amazon. All the girls are gushing over this series so I thought I’d better give it a look. Strictly for scientific purposes, of course.
• Love in a Cold Climate, Nancy Mitford – our second book club read.

Currently Reading

A Discovery of Witches, Deborah Harkness

Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

I got this book from the library. In large-format paperback and at just shy of 600 pages, it’s really quite enormous. I have no idea how long it will take me to get through it, but I’m really enjoying the world of creatures that has been woven around the familiar landmarks of Oxford.
